Sam Altman’s net worth is estimated at $3.2 billion as of October 2026, according to the Forbes real-time billionaires list, which ranks the OpenAI CEO No. 1,311 in the world. What surprises most people is where that money comes from. Forbes says he has no equity in OpenAI, the company he runs, and that his fortune comes from his investments instead, including stakes in Stripe, Reddit and the fusion energy company Helion.
Published estimates for Altman range from about $2 billion to $5 billion, mainly because his largest holdings are private companies that are only revalued when they raise new money. The Radar Readout below compares the main figures, explains why we follow Forbes, and lets you see how long it would take you to earn the same amount.

Sources and how we estimated this
Our headline follows the Forbes real-time profile as of Oct 26, 2026, which credits his wealth to investments rather than OpenAI stock. The range runs from the June 2024 WSJ portfolio value of about $2.8 billion to the $5 billion Celebrity Net Worth figure, because his biggest holdings, such as Helion and Stripe, are private and only revalued when they raise money. How Sam Altman’s $3.2 Billion Net Worth Is Built
Forbes does not publish a line by line breakdown of Altman’s fortune. Its profile describes him as a prolific venture investor and names Stripe, Reddit and Helion as key stakes. Other reporting fills in some of the detail, although several of these values are snapshots from different dates and some come from a single source.
| Holding | What has been reported | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Helion Energy | He has put more than $375 million into the fusion company and is its chairman; Celebrity Net Worth lists the stake at $1.65 billion | MIT Technology Review, Wikipedia, Celebrity Net Worth |
| Stripe | An early stake that Celebrity Net Worth lists at $632 million | Forbes, Celebrity Net Worth |
| Formation Bio (formerly TrialSpark) | Listed at $519 million | Celebrity Net Worth |
| 8.7% before the 2024 IPO, then worth roughly $435 million on a $5 billion valuation | Fortune, citing Reddit’s S-1 filing | |
| Retro Biosciences | $180 million invested in 2021 | MIT Technology Review |
| Venture funds | Funds tied to Hydrazine Capital, the firm he started with his brother Jack in 2012 | Bloomberg via Wikipedia |
| Real estate | Reported purchases of $27 million, $15.7 million and $43 million in 2020 and 2021 | Celebrity Net Worth |
Celebrity Net Worth says several of those stake values were disclosed during the 2026 Musk v. OpenAI trial, alongside smaller holdings such as Lattice (formerly Degree) at $28 million and Cerebras at $3.3 million. We could not confirm those figures in a court record, so treat them as reported rather than verified. By our math, the five stakes on that list add up to about $2.83 billion, which lines up closely with the Forbes total.
Why He Owns No OpenAI Stock
Altman co-founded OpenAI in 2015 as a nonprofit and became its CEO in 2019, after leaving his job as president of Y Combinator. Forbes states plainly that he has no equity in OpenAI. Celebrity Net Worth reports that his OpenAI salary is $65,000 a year, a tiny sum next to his investment income.
That makes his position unusual. Wikipedia reports that OpenAI closed a funding round in spring 2026 at a post-money valuation of $852 billion, and Forbes reported in September 2026 that the company was weighing a new round at a valuation of up to $1.5 trillion. Wikipedia’s breakdown of OpenAI’s ownership lists employees and investors at 47%, Microsoft at 27% and the OpenAI Foundation at 26%, with no stake listed for Altman personally. If that ever changes, his net worth could change dramatically, but no such grant has been confirmed.
His time at OpenAI has not been smooth. On Nov 17, 2023, the board removed him, saying he had not been consistently candid in his communications. After a revolt by employees, he returned on Nov 21, 2023. In 2026 he was a defendant in Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI; on May 18, 2026, a jury sided with OpenAI and its executives, finding Musk’s claims were barred by the statute of limitations.
Loopt, Y Combinator and the Start of His Fortune
Altman studied computer science at Stanford for two years before leaving in 2005 to co-found Loopt, a location sharing app, at age 19. Green Dot Corporation bought Loopt in March 2012 for $43.4 million. Forbes says he used the proceeds to seed his own venture fund.
In April 2012 he co-founded Hydrazine Capital with his brother Jack Altman, with an initial fund of $21 million, according to Wikipedia. Around the same time he became a partner at Y Combinator, the startup accelerator, and in February 2014 he succeeded Paul Graham as its president. He left YC in March 2019 to focus on OpenAI.
Those years gave him early access to many of the startups that later made him rich. In June 2024, the Wall Street Journal valued his portfolio of more than 400 companies at around $2.8 billion, according to Wikipedia’s summary of the report.
Helion, Retro and His Biggest Personal Bets
Altman has made two especially large personal bets. MIT Technology Review reported that he put more than $375 million into Helion Energy, the fusion power company he chairs, after starting with around $10 million. The same report said he wrote checks totaling $180 million to Retro Biosciences, a longevity research company, in 2021. He told the magazine he “basically just took all my liquid net worth” and put it into those two companies.
Helion’s valuation has risen since then. Wikipedia reports that its January 2025 Series F of $425 million valued the company at $5.4 billion, and a June 2026 Series G of $465 million led by Thrive Capital valued it at $15.5 billion. Helion has an agreement to supply Microsoft with power from a planned plant near Malaga, Washington, targeted for 2028. Because Helion is private, the value of Altman’s stake is not public, which is one reason estimates of his net worth differ so much.
Reddit, Stripe and Other Holdings
Altman invested in Reddit in its 2014 funding round and again in later rounds, and he sat on the company’s board for seven years until 2022, according to Fortune. When Reddit filed to go public in February 2024, its S-1 listed him as the third-largest shareholder with an 8.7% stake. Reddit went public in March 2024 and trades on the New York Stock Exchange as RDDT. We have not found a recent filing showing how much of that stake he still holds, so we do not put a current dollar value on it.
His other investments include Stripe, Airbnb, Boom Technology, Cruise and Humane, according to Wikipedia. He co-founded Tools for Humanity, the company behind the Worldcoin project, in 2019, and he was chairman of the nuclear power company Oklo after its 2024 SPAC merger before stepping down in April 2025 to avoid a conflict of interest.
Homes and Giving
Celebrity Net Worth reports that Altman paid $27 million for a Russian Hill mansion in San Francisco in March 2020, $15.7 million for a 950 acre estate in Napa in December 2020, and $43 million for an oceanfront estate on Hawaii’s Big Island in July 2021. Wikipedia notes that he married Oliver Mulherin at their Hawaii estate in January 2024. The couple welcomed a son in 2025.
In May 2024, Altman and Mulherin signed the Giving Pledge, committing to give away most of their wealth. His political donations have included $250,000 to American Bridge 21st Century in 2020 and $1 million to Donald Trump’s inaugural fund in December 2024.
Why Other Sites Say $5 Billion
| Source | Figure | Date | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forbes real-time | $3.2 billion | Oct 26, 2026 | Our headline; ranks him No. 1,311 |
| Celebrity Net Worth | $5 billion | May 2026 | Highest published figure |
| Wall Street Journal | About $2.8 billion | June 2024 | Value of his investment portfolio |
| Bloomberg Billionaires Index | $2 billion | March 2024 | His debut on the index, mostly from venture funds |
The gap comes down to how each publisher values private companies. Helion, Stripe and Formation Bio do not trade on a stock exchange, so their worth is set by funding rounds that happen months or years apart. A publisher that marks his Helion stake to the June 2026 valuation will land much higher than one using older numbers. Forbes, which ranked him No. 2,692 in 2024, No. 2,233 in 2025 and No. 1,251 in 2026, has moved him steadily up its list as those holdings grew.
How Sam Altman Compares
Altman is one of the rare tech leaders whose fortune does not come from the company he runs. For contrast, see how other business heavyweights built their wealth:
- Elon Musk’s net worth, an early OpenAI backer who later sued the company and Altman.
- Rihanna’s net worth, another fortune where business stakes matter as much as the day job.
- Jay-Z’s net worth, a music star who is also known as an investor.
- Kanye West’s net worth, another profile shaped by business deals as well as music.
