Elon Musk Net Worth: How SpaceX’s Record IPO and Tesla Made Him Worth $922.9 Billion

Depositphotos / Author IC Photo 234336004

Elon Musk’s net worth is estimated at $922.9 billion as of October 2026, according to Forbes, which makes him the richest person in the world by a wide margin. Almost all of it sits in two public companies: SpaceX, which listed on the Nasdaq in June 2026 in the largest IPO ever, and Tesla.

Because both stakes are priced every trading day, his fortune moves by tens of billions in a week. He became the first trillionaire when SpaceX went public, briefly hit $1.4 trillion, fell back after the stock slumped and crossed $1 trillion again in October before slipping this week. The Radar Readout below shows what Forbes and Bloomberg say and exactly what the fortune is made of.

SpaceX: The Largest IPO Ever

Musk founded SpaceX in May 2002. In February 2026 it acquired his artificial intelligence company xAI, which already owned X, in a deal that valued the combined company at $1.25 trillion.

On June 12, 2026, SpaceX listed on the Nasdaq under the ticker SPCX. It priced shares at $135, valuing the company at $1.77 trillion, and raised about $86 billion including the overallotment, the biggest IPO on record. The stock closed its first day at $161, up 19 percent, for a market value of about $2.1 trillion. That day Musk became the first person worth more than $1 trillion.

The ride since has been bumpy. Bloomberg reported that by late July his wealth had fallen more than $600 billion from its peak as the shares slumped on valuation worries. SpaceX then rebounded 58 percent from its August low, and on October 5 Bloomberg had him back at $1.04 trillion. In October SpaceX reported its first quarterly profit, $4.4 billion for July to September. Musk and other insiders agreed not to sell shares for 366 days after the IPO.

Tesla and the Pay Packages

Musk invested in Tesla in 2004 and became chief executive in 2008. His stake is worth about $147 billion at current prices, and Forbes leaves out unvested restricted stock that could add roughly another 8 percent of the company once it vests.

His pay has been a long legal fight. A Delaware judge voided his roughly $55 billion 2018 award in January 2024, but the Delaware Supreme Court restored it in December 2025, and he exercised those options on June 16, 2026. In November 2025 Tesla shareholders approved a new CEO award worth up to $1 trillion in stock if he hits a long list of milestones.

A Possible Tesla and SpaceX Merger

On October 20, 2026, Musk said SpaceX and Tesla had set up special committees to explore merging, a deal that would create a company worth more than $3 trillion. He called it a good idea with “a lot of merit” but said it is a high hurdle that would need approval from Tesla shareholders. No terms have been agreed. SpaceX shares jumped more than 8 percent after hours on the news.

From Zip2 to PayPal to Twitter

  • Zip2: the software company he co-founded in 1995 sold to Compaq in 1999 for $307 million in cash. His 7 percent stake brought him $22 million.
  • X.com and PayPal: X.com merged with Confinity in 2000 to form PayPal, which eBay bought in 2002 for $1.5 billion in stock. As the largest shareholder, Musk received $175.8 million.
  • Twitter: he bought it on October 27, 2022, for about $44 billion. It was later folded into xAI.
  • Neuralink and The Boring Company: he co-founded Neuralink in 2016 with $100 million of his own money and started The Boring Company in 2017.

Homes, Giving and Spending

Musk said in 2020 that he would own no house. In February 2026, however, The New York Times identified at least 37 companies holding property that appears to be for his personal use, including condos, private planes and at least 1,000 acres of land.

The Musk Foundation held more than $14 billion in assets at the end of 2024. In 2022 he gave it Tesla stock worth about $2 billion. The foundation gave away less than 5 percent of its assets in 2021 and 2022, below the legal minimum for tax-exempt foundations.
