How Matthew McConaughey’s $170 Million Net Worth Is Built
No verified figure exists for McConaughey’s wealth, so we built one from the bottom up. We began with his reported film fees and the two published estimates, assumed he keeps about half of gross pay after agents, managers, lawyers and tax, and then added property and his Austin FC stake at cautious values.

The first lane carries the most uncertainty. It covers two decades of studio fees, more than 100 commercials according to Celebrity Net Worth, and the long Lincoln campaign, none of which has an audited total. The Austin FC lane is small on purpose: the club was valued at about $910 million by 2026 according to Celebrity Net Worth, but the size of his stake has never been disclosed.
From Dazed and Confused to Romantic Comedy Star
McConaughey studied radio, television and film at the University of Texas at Austin and graduated in 1993, the same year his supporting role as Wooderson in Dazed and Confused made him a name. His early paychecks were small. Celebrity Net Worth and Wealthy Gorilla both list $48,500 for Angels in the Outfield (1994), and Wealthy Gorilla puts his Boys on the Side (1995) fee at $150,000.
His first leading man success, A Time to Kill (1996), paid about $250,000 by both sites’ accounts, and Amistad (1997) about $1 million. Lead roles in Contact (1997) and U-571 (2000) followed. Then came romantic comedies. The Wedding Planner (2001) paid a reported $5 million, and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003) kept him in the genre.
The action adventure Sahara (2005) is where the published numbers split. Celebrity Net Worth says he received $8 million to act, plus $250,000 for his production company and more than $800,000 in perks paid by the studio. Wealthy Gorilla lists $14.5 million for the same film. Celebrity Net Worth instead ties a $14.5 million figure to a romantic comedy offer he turned down, so treat the Sahara fee as unsettled.
The McConaissance and the Oscar
After a break, McConaughey moved to dramatic work with The Lincoln Lawyer (2011), then Magic Mike and Mud (2012). That run peaked with Dallas Buyers Club (2013), in which he played Ron Woodroof and won the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 86th Oscars. Celebrity Net Worth reports he was paid less than $200,000 for the role, so the film raised his value far more than his bank balance.
The payoff came quickly. He played a supporting role in The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), then starred as Rust Cohle in True Detective (2014), which brought a Primetime Emmy nomination. Wealthy Gorilla reports $200,000 an episode, or about $1.6 million for the season. Celebrity Net Worth and Wealthy Gorilla both put his fee for Interstellar (2014) at $18 million. Wealthy Gorilla also lists $3.5 million for The Sea of Trees (2015) and $5 million for Free State of Jones (2016). He also voiced a lead role in the animated film Sing (2016).
The Gentlemen and The Lost Bus
His biggest reported single fee is for The Gentlemen, which both estimate sites put at $20 million. Celebrity Net Worth describes about $20 million as his typical fee for a major studio role, though that figure is not confirmed by any studio.
In The Lost Bus he plays Kevin McKay, a school bus driver who carries children through the 2018 Camp Fire. Greengrass directed from a script he wrote with Brad Ingelsby, based on Lizzie Johnson’s 2021 book Paradise, with Jamie Lee Curtis and Jason Blum among the producers. America Ferrera co-stars, and Levi McConaughey and Kay McCabe McConaughey from his family also appear. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, 2025, had a limited US theatrical release on September 19 and reached Apple TV+ on October 3. His fee has not been reported, so we model it inside the recent work lane.
Endorsements: Lincoln, Wild Turkey and Salesforce
Brand work is a large part of McConaughey’s fortune. Lincoln announced a multi-year collaboration in August 2014, with commercials directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. Wikipedia notes that Lincoln sales rose 25 percent in the month after the ads debuted, and Celebrity Net Worth says the partnership ran for about 11 years before ending in 2025. No fee has been published.
Wild Turkey hired him in 2016 as creative director and spokesman. The richest reported deal is with Salesforce, which Celebrity Net Worth says pays about $10 million a year in cash and equity for creative and advertising work, and which still listed him as a partner in 2026. That figure is not confirmed by Salesforce, so we keep only about half of it and treat it as a reported estimate.
Books, Teaching and Austin FC
His memoir Greenlights (2020) reached number one on the New York Times bestseller list and has sold more than six million copies, according to Celebrity Net Worth. He followed it with the children’s book Just Because (2023) and the poetry collection Poems & Prayers (September 2025). His book advances and royalties are not public.
Since 2019 he has been a professor of practice in the University of Texas at Austin’s Department of Radio-Television-Film, after teaching there as a visiting instructor from 2015. Also in 2019 he became a minority owner of Austin FC, with the title minister of culture. He founded the just keep livin foundation, which supports healthy choices for teenagers.
Real Estate
McConaughey’s main home is in Austin, Texas, and its value has not been reported. The sites disagree on his best known property deal. Celebrity Net Worth says he bought a Malibu house at Point Dume for about $10 million in 2007 and sold it to Phil Lord in 2020 for about $15 million. Wealthy Gorilla says he paid $11 million in October 2007 and sold for $14.75 million in July 2020. In 2021 he and Camila Alves bought a home at Ka’upulehu on Hawaii’s Big Island for about $7.85 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
Why Other Sites Say $160 Million to $200 Million
| Source | Estimate | Updated | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Celebrity Net Worth | $200 million | September 2026 | Includes the reported Salesforce deal and Hawaii home |
| Wealthy Gorilla | $160 million | October 2026 | Body text says $160 million while its page summary says $140 million |
| Net Worth Radar | $170 million | October 2026 | Modeled from fees, kept at about half after costs and tax |
Both sites add up headline fees, which overstates what an actor keeps. Wealthy Gorilla’s own film table totals about $67.4 million in gross fees, before any commissions or tax. Our figure sits below Celebrity Net Worth’s because we discount unconfirmed deals, and above Wealthy Gorilla’s because we add the reported Salesforce partnership and his property.
